Throughout her life, Mary Lou has had ties to both West Virginia and Texas. She attended Fairmont Senior High School in West Virginia but competed in the 1984 Olympics during her sophomore year of high school.

Mary Lou Retton was married to Shannon Kelley, a former University of Texas quarterback and Houston real estate developer. Together, they have four daughters: Shayla, McKenna, Skyla, and Emma. In February 2018, Mary Lou Retton and her husband divorced, marking a significant transition in her personal life.
