Who imagined that our favourite food could be available at our doorstep the next moment we crave it? Well, IITians made the impossible possible by bringing in an online food delivery service called Zomato. Zomato is one of the top successful Startups by IITians Deepinder Goyal and Pankaj Chaddah.

Zomato is available in more than 24 countries such as UAE, Sri Lanka, Qatar, the UK, Indonesia, including India. The startup by IITians, is now expanded to 1,000 Indian cities and towns, as of 2022–23. It was founded by Deepinder Goyal and Pankaj Chaddah in 2008. Zomato was initially named Foodiebay. It was renamed Zomato in the year 2011.

Deepinder Goyal is 40 years old as of 2023. He completed his graduation from IIT Delhi in Mathematics and Computing. Pankaj Chaddah is also an IIT Delhi alumnus and he worked at Bain and Company with Deepender Goyal after graduation. They were both analysts at Bain and Company.

Biryani By Kilo

Biryani By Kilo is yet another IITian startups in the food industry, that added an extra pinch of aroma and taste to India’s favourite Biryani. Biryani By Kilo is known for its services of providing freshly cooked biryani for individual orders. Along with that, they have added an extra effort to the serving style of Biryani with the earthen pot and candle to preheat the Biryani before serving.

This one IITian Startup is led by Vishal Jindal and Kaushik Roy in 2015 – the veterans of the industry. Biryani by Kilo is known for its Khansama style of cooking, wherein each biryani is freshly cooked for every individual order and delivered in the handi in which it was cooked. Kaushik Roy is the CEO and Co-Founder, Biryani by Kilo.


You know, from Chai to Biryani IITians are the backbone of most of the successful IITian startups in India. Chaayos is an initiative by two techies – Nitin Saluja and Raghav Verma graduated from IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi respectively. Today they have approx 16 stores running in Delhi including Mumbai.

Before the foundation of Chaayos, they used to work in a US consulting firm Opera Solutions. Nitin, was always a chai freak and the idea of a startup struck him while he was working at Opera Solutions. And in his quest, he met his co-founder Raghav Verma and kicked off the business of selling tea.

They named their startup – CHAAYOS and the first outlet store was opened in November 2012 in Gurgaon now Gurugram.

Chaayos is known for serving a variety of teas. Can you imagine 25 different types of teas with over 12000 customisation ways? Yes, Chaayos make it possible. They brewed the versatility of tea with taste in every cup they served and that’s how it made it to the list of one of the successful IITian Startups in India.


There would be anyone who has not heard the name Flipkart. To your surprise, it is also a startup by IITians. Flipkart is an Indian e-commerce company, headquartered in Bangalore, and incorporated in Singapore as a private limited company.

Flipkart was founded by IIT Delhi alumni, Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal in October 2007 in Mumbai. They both were former Amazon employees.

Flipkart was initially an online bookstore and slowly it expanded into selling other product categories such as consumer electronics, fashion, home essentials, groceries, and lifestyle products. Flipkart is a competitor to Amazon and Snapdeal.

Snapdeal is another Indian e-commerce company, based in New Delhi, India. It was founded in February 2010 by Kunal Bahl and Rohit Bansal.

Rohit Bansal is an IIT Delhi notable alumnus who is also the co-founder and COO of the e-commerce company Snapdeal. Bansal cofounded Snapdeal along with his school friend Kunal Bahl on February 4, 2010.

Snapdeal was founded as a daily deals platform, before expanding to become an online marketplace in October 2011.


Infosys is one of the most successful IITian Startups in India. It is an Indian multinational information technology company that provides business consulting, information technology and outsourcing services. The company was co-founded by the IITian billionaire NR Narayan Murthy. It was founded in Pune and is headquartered in Bangalore. Infosys is the second-largest Indian IT company, after Tata Consultancy Services, by 2020 revenue figures.

The seven co-founders of Infosys are N. R. Narayana Murthy, Nandan Nilekani, Kris Gopalakrishnan, S. D. Shibulal, K. Dinesh, N. S. Raghavan, Ashok Arora.


Ola Cabs, another in the list of IITian startups, is an Indian multinational ridesharing company that provides its services in 250+ cities. It is headquartered in Bangalore. It was founded by IITian Bhawish Aggarwal and Ankit Bhati in 2011. Ola also operates in other business verticals including financial services and cloud kitchens.

Ola Cabs offers different levels of service, ranging from economic to luxury travel all through the mobile app. Ola serves in India, Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

Bhawish completed a bachelor’s degree in computer science and engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay in 2008. The idea for a cab company struck Aggarwal when he had a bad experience with a taxi, which led him and Ankit Bhati to co-found Ola Cabs in 2010.


ixigo is an Indian online travel portal, launched in 2007. It was founded by IITian Rajnish Kumar and Aloke Bajpai. ixigo is known for comparing real-time travel information, prices and availability for flights, trains, buses, and hotels, and allows ticket booking through its associate websites and apps.

Aloke Bajpai is the CEO of ixigo and Rajnish Kumar is CTO of the company.


A group of twelve students from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay founded Housing.com in June 2012. Housing.com lists properties submitted by users, either brokers or owners, on an interactive map. The search results are filtered by available rooms, lifestyle ratings, child friendliness index (CFI), and area-based pricing. It is also one of the most successful startups by IITians.

It is a Mumbai-based real estate search portal that allows customers to search for housing based on geography, number of rooms, and various other filters. Rahul Yadav is one of the co-founders of the company who is also from IIT Bombay.


AcadBoost is an online learning platform for JEE, NEET, Foundation and College level. It was founded by IIT JEE 2017 topper Kalpit Veerwal. He is also the CEO of the company. Kalpit is also an IITian YouTuber. He established a record of scoring 360/360 in JEE Main. He completed his B. Tech in Computer Science from IIT Bombay. Acadboost Technologies Private Limited’s operating revenues range is INR 1 cr – 100 cr for the financial year ending on 31 March 2022.
