The incident occurred five years to the day after the disappearance of Natalee Holloway. Stephany, a 21-year-old Peruvian business student, met van der Sloot while playing poker at a Lima casino. Her murder took place in May 2010 when the two went to his hotel, where a heated argument ensued, resulting in her tragic death.
Van der Sloot confessed to her murder, revealing that he lost control during the altercation. After her death, he fled the scene, taking her belongings. A maid later discovered Stephany’s lifeless body with a broken neck. Van der Sloot was arrested in Chile, sent back to Peru, and subsequently sentenced to 28 years in prison for her murder.
Stephany Flores Ramirez’s untimely demise left her family heartbroken, and they sought justice for her. The case drew attention because of van der Sloot’s connection to Natalee Holloway’s disappearance and the subsequent extortion attempt involving her family. Van der Sloot’s admission to Stephany’s murder revealed parallels to the circumstances of Holloway’s disappearance and death. Though van der Sloot will be incarcerated until at least 2043 for this crime, justice for Stephany Flores Ramirez cannot erase the pain of her loss.
