In a shocking and tragic incident in Naperville, suburban Chicago, 51-year-old Jennifer Kouchoukos has been accused of stabbing two young girls, ages 4 and 1, while babysitting them. The judge denied her pretrial release on Wednesday, emphasizing the severity of the charges, including attempted first-degree murder.
Discovery of the Disturbing Scene
Responding to a suicide attempt call on November 17, police found the girls, both covered in blood, in the kitchen and bathroom of their Lisle home. Kouchoukos, also soaked in blood, was found near one of the children in the bathroom. The horrific scene prompted immediate action.
Kouchoukos is charged with two counts each of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery to a child under 13, and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. The children, stabbed multiple times in their back and chest areas, were initially taken to a local hospital and later transferred to Comer Children’s Hospital in Chicago. Thankfully, their injuries, though severe, were not life-threatening, and they are on the road to recovery.
Scene Investigation Unveils More
Upon processing the scene, authorities discovered multiple knives stained with what appeared to be blood, an empty bottle of wine, and a nearly empty bottle of rum. The unsettling findings deepened the gravity of the situation.
Kouchoukos was released from the hospital on December 26 and subsequently transported to the DuPage County Jail. The state filed a motion for a psychiatric evaluation, underscoring the need to assess her mental state. Her arraignment is scheduled for January 12.
DuPage County State’s Attorney Bob Berlin expressed the gravity of the case, acknowledging its disturbing nature. He emphasized gratitude that the injuries sustained by the young girls were not life-threatening, providing a glimmer of hope amid the tragedy.
