Fani Taifa Willis was born in 1971 in Inglewood, California. Her father was not only a criminal defence attorney but also a member of the Black Panthers. In her early years, she faced family changes as her parents divorced when she was just in the first grade.

Her family then moved to Washington, D.C., but her mother eventually returned to California, leaving Fani mostly under her father’s care.

Willis pursued higher education at Howard University, where she graduated cum laude with a degree in political science in 1993. She later made her way to Atlanta to attend Emory University School of Law, where she earned her Juris Doctor degree in 1996.

Prosecutorial Career

Fani Willis spent 16 years as a prosecutor in the Fulton County district attorney’s office. One of her most significant cases was her role as lead prosecutor in the Atlanta Public Schools cheating scandal trial from 2014 to 2015.

This case involved twelve educators accused of changing students’ answers to boost scores on standardized tests. Eleven of them were convicted of racketeering under Georgia’s RICO statute in April 2015.

In 2018, Fani Willis ventured into private practice. The following year, she ran for a seat on the Fulton County Superior Court, although she did not secure the position. Subsequently, in 2019, Willis assumed the role of chief municipal judge for South Fulton, Georgia.
