In a recent investigative report, CNN has unveiled disturbing allegations of inappropriate conduct against Glenn Sulmasy, a former teacher at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and has shed light on the troubling manner in which Coast Guard officials handled the case. These revelations have cast a shadow on the academy’s commitment to addressing misconduct and have triggered a call for greater transparency and accountability.
Allegations of Inappropriate Conduct
Glenn Sulmasy, now serving as the president of Nichols College in Massachusetts, faced recommendations for prosecution by Coast Guard attorneys stemming from his extensive exchange of sexually suggestive messages with a former student he once taught. These messages date back almost a decade and led prosecutors to consider charges of “conduct unbecoming an officer.”
Confidential records reviewed by CNN revealed that Coast Guard investigators uncovered over 1,600 texts exchanged between Sulmasy and the female student, with many being described as “sexual or flirtatious” in nature. The prosecution memo indicated that, at a minimum, Sulmasy had offered favorable grades and displayed favoritism in exchange for engaging in sexual banter with the student. Notably, the student herself denied any sexual contact with Sulmasy, asserting that she had earned her grades independently and considered herself a “willing participant” in the exchanges.
Verbal Harassment Claims
Further allegations against Sulmasy came to light as one former student, Melissa McCafferty, a 2011 academy graduate, reported experiencing verbal harassment from Sulmasy during her time at the academy. McCafferty claimed that Sulmasy made inappropriate comments about her appearance, including statements about her attire. She confided in a female professor at the academy who had survived a sexual assault within the Coast Guard. Shockingly, McCafferty alleged that the professor warned her to remain silent, emphasizing Sulmasy’s perceived untouchability and the potential threat to her own career if she spoke out.
Coast Guard Handling of the Case
Despite the strong evidence discovered by Coast Guard investigators, which led to recommendations of military court-martial charges against Sulmasy for “conduct unbecoming an officer” and “willful dereliction of duty,” senior Coast Guard officials chose not to pursue charges against him. This decision also resulted in the findings of the investigation being kept hidden from public view.
Call for Greater Transparency
In the wake of these revelations, Nichols College has initiated an impartial, third-party investigation into the matter, underscoring its commitment to addressing these allegations seriously. The case has also raised broader questions about how the Coast Guard Academy and the military at extensively handle allegations of misconduct and highlights the pressing need for increased transparency and accountability in addressing such issues. Congressional lawmakers have called for independent investigations and introduced legislation aimed at enhancing protections for academy cadets who report sexual assault allegations.
